Don't use brave.
And: I don't know if Otto is really that great. It's just a marketplace where people sell cheap stuff imported from china. I just ordered a mirror that I have to send back, because it's not even (as in flat).
They are also a German multimillionaire family. They are old German money. The kind that uses their political influence to lobby against property or inheritance taxes.
So it really is an alternative to Amazon in all regards:
- Selling cheap crap from china to overblown prices
- Giving money to people who have too much already
- Using that money to influence the politics in favour of the richest
I just hope they also have shitty customer service and handle their employees like shit so they can replace the big A.
Not to defend them, but almost every single rich person lobbies for less property and inheritance taxes
That's odd...
They are an odd shop, anyway. I recently looked where to get a certain LEGO set. At their own shop, it cost โฌ99, at OTTO, the exact same set was โฌ179.
Yeah some stuff it's expensive AF
Cidscount and Galaxus should be good alternatives
Looks like onbuy.com ships internationally (they're UK based)
So that would mean additional customs?
I guess. The item I want (table saw dial indicator) it's a bit cheaper than Otto (15โฌ) but it will probably get stopped by the custom. But yeah since I can't find it anywhere locally, I will buy it there edit: they don't ship outside of the UK
It is real. Apparently: "Die Lieferung erfolgt ausschlieรlich innerhalb von Deutschland." (Delivery is only possible within Germany.)
Weak Otto. 2025 and you can not ship a good from Germany to Italy or Denmark while Amazon and [add china shop] ship worldwide over a decade.
Otto is generally surprisingly backwards. They still can't even handle multiple vendors in a single invoice. That means, if you buy five items, but two of them are from independent sellers, you'll not only pay for shipping three times (somewhat understandable), but you'll also get three different invoices that you have to pay separately. It's 2025, and 90% of all software devs in Hamburg have worked for Otto at some point, and they still can't get their shit together.

I'd put money on that being a dumpster fire of a workplace - the kind where turnover is very high, everyone is constantly busy putting out fires with slapped together solutions, and if anyone tries to do anything that might prevent future fires they get shouted at for not putting out fires.
No, they actually got a pretty good reputation. They're a big corporation with probably hundreds of devs in their HQ. It's not unlikely that a whole bunch of devs came into town specifically because of them or were hired straight out of university.

If they are like that and not dystopian as an employer they would be the big exception in that size category.

Hell, I'd be happy to take a crack at it if they'd sponsor my work visa...
Actually, they might do that.
Thatโs Germany for you ๐ฅฒ๐
Always at the forefront of the last decade (sometimes even last 2 decades!)
Apparently, Otto itself delivers only in Germany. Yet, there are ~~subsidies~~ subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Austria, UK, and Japan.
subsidiaries?
Oh, yes. Thanks.
ah, that explains it.
I've been in Japan a decade and I think this is the first I've seen the name. Interesting
It could be because they donโt have any contract signed for delivering in other eu countries
