Netflix has penny pinched itself into irrelevance. It used to be the home of prestige programming like Mindhunter. Now it’s full of knockoff reality programming like endless baking shows and temptation island.

Thanks to Zaslav, HBO is headed for the same dumpster.

Yeah it's interesting and I wonder if it'll work out for them long-term. My whole viewpoint of netflix has switched radically from "wide in content and tons of high quality" to "dearth of content and mostly low quality slop or cancelled TV shows". I just don't see the point in engaging with it anymore.

Yes, they famously wanted to be streaming HBO before HBO could become streaming. Instead HBO turned into Netflix. They just make tons of junk to see what fits. The problem is that although niche products will attract lots of different niches of customers, without high quality content, it's a costly subscription. Especially as they keep jacking up prices.

For anyone who skimmed just the headline,

On our shows, we were dealing with the old Marvel television regime, which operated independently at Disney.

This isn't overly surprising, especially as Perlmutter was known for being incredibly thrifty and unwilling to spend any more than he deemed necessary. That ultimately played a big role in Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige asking Disney CEO Bob Iger to become a separate entity without the input of Perlmutter or Marvel Entertainment's Creative Committee.

Ike Perlmutter is the exact opposite of who you want in control. He'll sacrifice anything and everything in the name of profit, you know like a "good businessesman". I would challenge anyone to find a positive article about Perlmutter.

Perlmutter and Arad brought Marvel back from bankruptcy, so there’s that I guess.

The people who made a surprise money printing machine with Iron Man brought Marvel back from bankruptcy. Perlmutter did cocaine and hired Feige.

As producers, whatever [Marvel] didn’t spend, they kept. So every time we wanted to add something to the show to make it better, it was a fistfight

Oh that explains a bunch.
