Google has the ability to stand up to trump. To destroy him, frankly.

But they'd have to not be little bitches, so I guess they don't.

I just need to use Gemini until this semester is over, then I’ll be degoogling completely. I just wish I could deapple too, but nope. Nearly every OS for mobile is built on android, browsers that are for “security” are run on chromium, safari is good for security but you have to pay for iCloud plus or whatever they call it to get the private relay option, it is infuriating that we just can’t get freedom from this garbage. Things are purposefully made to be so expensive that only huge companies can afford to run it, openAI and meta literally pirated books, articles, journals, etc and although WE don’t like it, the government doesn’t care because OpenAI and meta are big companies who can do those things; neither Trump nor Biden gave a shit about it. We need

There are a few options like graphene os, /e/os, lineage OS etc. Take a look. I am de Googleing right now and shifted to e/os for a few months, it has been going well.

I'd really love for someone to come up with a phone OS that I could use on my cell phone. Mine runs on Android and I want to dump all things Google! I read that they have an exclusive deal with reddit where ALL data on reddit would be made available to them for training their AI algorithms. I went on perplexity.ai to check for this and here's the response I received to my query: The deal between Reddit and Google to share data for AI training and search purposes will likely have significant impacts on Reddit user privacy:

  1. Increased data sharing: Google will have exclusive access to Reddit's Data API, allowing them to collect real-time, structured content from the platform13. This means more user-generated content and activity data will be shared with a third party.
  2. Enhanced user profiling: Google will use this data to improve its AI models and search capabilities, potentially leading to more accurate user profiling across Google's services36.
  3. Potential for more personalized advertising: With access to Reddit's data, Google may be able to create more detailed user profiles, potentially leading to more targeted advertising both on and off Reddit26.
  4. Reduced anonymity: While Reddit has traditionally allowed for relative anonymity, this data sharing could make it easier to connect Reddit activity with other online identities13.
  5. Increased scrutiny of user content: As Reddit seeks to maintain its value for AI training, there may be stricter moderation and potential removal of certain types of content or communities4.
  6. Changes to user agreements: Reddit may update its privacy policy and user agreement to reflect this new data sharing arrangement, potentially granting themselves broader rights to use and share user data6. It's important to note that while Reddit claims it does not sell personal information to third parties, this deal represents a significant change in how user data is shared and utilized23. Users concerned about privacy may need to be more cautious about the information they share on the platform and may want to review their privacy settings regularly. P.S.: Ignore the weird numbers as those are reference links. I copy-pasted this stuff.

It exists and is called graphene OS. It is primarily focused on privacy and security though and as such only supports google pixels since they have both good hardware security and fast security patches. Most others fail at one of the two.

Otherwise you could install calyx OS.

Oh tysm! Will Calyx OS work on a Samsung Galaxy phone? Mine's a cheap model. lol. I looked up their page and i doesn't list Samsung phones among devices supported. I'll check Graphene as well. :)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 21 hours ago

I'm not sure, I got a used Pixel so I can use graphene.

This will make groceries cheaper

UnGoogled everything is an improvement. Hard to do tho with employers.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 15 hours ago

Not too bad with Graphene OS. Graphene can run everything Google while keeping it completely containerized and away from the rest of your phone. It doesn't help with employer assigned tech, no, but at least you can keep any Google apps your employer might want you to have in a nice little isolated environment.

Something adjacent to degoogling: I am concerned that Microsoft would collaborate with the Trump Regime. I never used Linux before, but I am now downloading Ubuntu. It feels like that I should do a dual-boot setup and get ready to abandon Windows if I hear about MS HQ in Washington having a DOGE presence.

Here's hoping that Europe and the Blue States are watching Microsoft for anything weird.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 12 hours ago

Linux is not really that hard to get used to. Welcome to the club the water is fine.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 22 hours ago

TBH, I assisted with some linux installs and setting up a dual boot was troublesome. Installing a clean install worked easier!

If you have an old, spare laptop around, I recommend trying linux first with that laptop before making the plunge.

Yes, Microsoft has no qualms about bending to governments, same with all other corporations.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Entirely plausible. Almost all civilian federal systems are Microsoft powered. They'd do anything to not squander that contract, I'm sure.

this is only effective in the US btw, this doesn't apply outside of the US, why google has done this? Probably the appease trump, and honestly, anything that keeps trump busy that isn't overthrowing the US government is good in my books.

It says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" for me in Europe.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

No bad ideas, right? How about the United States of Mexico?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Mexico already are the United States of Mexico...?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess I can live with calling it "Gulf of America" if we also rename "Gulf of California" to "Gulf of Mexico"

When will Lemmy users stop talking about politics. It's getting old fast

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Lemmy users tend to be idealistic enough to abandon Reddit, it's always going to be heavily political.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

is wanting to destroy google politics talk?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Stop being such a pussy.
