I'm posting because originally when I was looking to create a Lemmy account I came across Hexbear. I read the code of conduct and TOS and to me it seemed like a great fit for me. However, after creating an account there, it seems pretty defederated.

Anyway I was curious on the happenings over there, because they have some cute custom emojis over there... but if there's a reason they're so defederated, I might just pretend i never made an account there

EDIT: omg I just found out this instance has cute blob emojis too :3 ablobcatrave

Hexbear, Lemmygrad, .ml are all part of the Tankie Triad. The real rules are all unwritten and you'll never know them till your posts get removed and you're banned

Their support for trans is paper thin at best, this is what Nutomic, head dev, biggest Tankie and lead admin of .ml has to say about the trans community

something something 🇷🇺 🇨🇳 🪖 or whatever...

I'm not trans so I never had reason to go down this particular rabbithole, but I remember when I first I joined the platform there was some kind of commotion around Hexbear and nobody wanting to be federated with em because of their supposedly weird tankie politics. I've never seen any tangible evidence of this (insert lack of rabbithole following here), but reading the comments, there seems to be two stories and now I'm really curious what you find out here.

I'll report back with my findings!

Lemmy instances are all independent and all have their own rules for posting and commenting. You will find that some communities allow things you find offensive, you will find that some communities ban things you find benign, this is decentralization in action.

If you consider yourself to be a leftist, you will find friends on the "tankie instances" (I can't speak to lemmygrad, I've never interacted with them).

There are also instances that have defederated with .world, because they find it to be offensive.

Blahaj is one of the instances I generally find to be enjoyable personally.

Edit: Just wanted to add, I've had comments modded on hexbear and on .world, remember the rules of the instance you're visiting.

So basically they're just reaaallllyyy far left? Here's the thing, I call myself a lefty, liberal, and progressive almost interchangeably. I don't think I'd fit in there because obviously tiananmen square happened, and obviously what's happening with Uyghur people is a goddamn travesty.

On top of that, while I think on paper communism sounds nice, in practice that's not really the case.

Also, one of the things that bummed me out was losing access to cute custom emojis but I've since learned that blahaj has some blobcat, wobble

[–] [email protected] 19 points 6 days ago

That's not really the issue. The issue is that hexbear allows and condones harassment and bullying. They also have a lot of "tankies" which are people who defend dictatorships and genocide.

cute custom emojis but I’ve since learned that blahaj has some

Blahaj could have you covered on that side!

Yep. They're pretty much far left.

Lemmy.ml, lemmygrad, and hexbear are the 3 most well known instances to house pro CCP and Putin loyalists

I'd recommend just blocking those 3 as you'll generally have a better time on the fediverse.

If you check [email protected] you'll find that the moderators themselves are the reasons why those instances are toxic

They are tankies. They like China and Russia because they're supposedly communist and ignore all the human rights violations.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 days ago

More "Insist the human rights violations are capitalist/western/CIA propaganda used to fuel a culture war". Which like yeah, the most effective propaganda is the truth and all that...

Oooo there's a bit here to read. Reading it now, thank you!

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago

Yeah don't trust that source

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 days ago

That's over a year old and you can't trust it because it's on .ml, the instance known to remove all dissenting voices be it against .ml itself or China/Russia
