Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

At some point I just need to jump off the ship and live full time Linux. I remember my Linux friend from high school telling me how cool gentoo was back in 2k3, and I got a disk and was like wtf… what do I do??? I need to try it again.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

gentoo is only cool about wasting your time, like any other source based distro. if you ever need, you can manually compile anything, the os shouldn't force you to do it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I am was going through the install last night, failed somewhere when trying to install GRUB. The install manual is way more convoluted than arch. Plus arch gives you that nice install script. I’m going to figure out gentoo at some point, but it really seems more like a challenge than something useful.

ah yes, grub NEVER works. it is overly complicated and much harder to set up than it should be. You can try alternatives though, like refind, limine, lilo, clover

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

i saw many people recommend refind. And i heard it is not so hard to set up, if you pay attention

Try one of the distros in the second panel next time.

Bro, I’ve been using Linux off and on since 2001ish. I used the original releases of fedora, and Ubuntu. Debian has been my longest favorite and it has only gotten better for a happy standard desktop use. I stopped daily driving Linux when I was in college and my engineering programs required me to use windows. But now that gaming is much more painless on Linux and I’ve built a solid system, 2025, might be the year of Linux for me.

While I do think these projects are awesome, they are based on Android. Even though Google has done a legitimately great job with Android, supporting Android (even indirectly) means I'm also supporting Google's other, more predatory products and endeavors.

Also, if tomorrow Google starts enshittifying upstream, these projects would likely stop; such is their fragility.

android was not made by google. They only bought it and develop it. No matter who made it, no one can change my mind that it is the best operating system ever, especially of you get rid of the google bloatware

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

android was not made by google

While that is true, it is of little relevance. That's like saying "Elon did not 'make' Twitter. Thus using it does not promote Musk."

no one can change my mind

That was not my intention at all! You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am entitled to mine.

it is the best operating system ever

I see you've not recieved the light of TempleOS ;P
On a more serious note though, I do agree that unfortunately (imo) Android has no viable alternatives. Hence the opinion, "everything sucks".

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

i do not use android because there is nothing better, which is also true btw, i use android because it is actually great, not as a necessary bad. If i wasn't a pc gamer, i'd seriously consider Blissrom x86_64 for a pc or laptop

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You asked for my opinion on these ROMs, so I'm telling my perspective. I've said nothing about your usage. If you find Android satisfactory, then good for you Β―\(ツ)/Β―

Also, my point was that I agree with the fact that Android is great; but I do not like it as using it empowers Google to develop their other, less "great" projects.

I feel like I'm kinda somewhere in between tech conservative and paranoid. I am privacy conscious but I don't engage in privacy related content too often. I use Arch, Manjaro, /e/OS on a fairphone with mostly foss apps and decline most cookies I can. I also like self hosted things just because the corporate SaaS stuff sucks over time with artificial restrictions and has no privacy
