A crackdown on political dissent is well under way in Germany. Over the past two years, institutions and authorities have cancelled events, exhibitions and awards over statements about Palestine or Israel.
There are many examples: the Frankfurt book fair indefinitely postponing an award ceremony for Adania Shibli; the Heinrich Böll Foundation withdrawing the Hannah Arendt prize from Masha Gessen; the No Other Land directors Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham being defamed by German ministers. And, most recently, the philosopher Omri Boehm being disinvited from speaking at this month’s anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald.
In nearly all of these cases, accusations of antisemitism loom large – even though Jews are often among those being targeted. More often than not, it is liberals driving or tacitly accepting these cancellations, while conservatives and the far right lean back and cheer them on.
Germany has recently taken a chilling new step, signalling its willingness to use political views as grounds to curb migration. Authorities are now moving to deport foreign nationals for participating in pro-Palestine actions. As I reported this week in the Intercept, four people in Berlin – three EU citizens and one US citizen – are set to be deported over their involvement in demonstrations against Israel’s war on Gaza. None of the four have been convicted of a crime, and yet the authorities are seeking to simply throw them out of the country.
I dunno if you live in the same reality as I do.
Oh Jesus Christ. Fuck off back to ~~reddit~~ .ee
What the fuck is wrong with the whole lot of you?
Fuck!
Lol I am sorry what? I guess we found the AfD voter guess what you piece of shit get fucked. germany only has a right to exist if it took every person from the AfD lined them up against a wall and shot them, then took like I dunno half of the Union and shot them as well. So get up against the wall
Germany’s “special relationship” with Israel has so many Germans so propagandized and so confidently incorrect in their “enlightened” understanding of Zionist settler-colonialism and of the state of Israel.
What is wrong with you? Why do I need to push you on something so obvious if you are a german? Which I assume you are with a name like Ole.
And if you can't see why it is about this now, if you truly don't know and aren't just playing dumb. The laws have been applied solely against anything to the left of the most right wing shit. Do a climate protest at a summit? Get charged with terrorism. Apply this law against some people protesting a genocide but the pigs from AfD and Union saying nazi shit over and over. Well can't do anything about that. These laws have over and over been used to suppress anything left of the left, and this is just another step in a long march towards outright fascism. Look at what the current politicians are doing or have done during the last year.
Like fucking Scholz and Merz having a discussion before the elections that came down to 'Actually I will be better at deporting the immigrants, actually I will be better at cutting social spending.' Scholz allowing NSDAP and SS Officers to get honored, like literally his direction was 'Ok so Wehrmachts Soldiers that didn't resist against the nazis can get honored' like literally U-Boot captains that were in the NSDAP and SS. Fucking Clown country. You want me to say 'oh this is all very normal for germany it's an election year of course they'll rehabilitate SS officers that's how they get voters'? Germany saying that they actually don't really think the ICC applies or even you know has any right or legal justification even though nazi germany literally was its justification.
Like CDU and AfD working together for the first time, and surely going to be in a coalition in 3 years time when the current coalition collapses. Why worry about something as small as the government just deporting people without a legal precedent. Like this is literally 'First they came from the communists' but I guess you think it's totally ok for the tankies to get put away and you'll be oh so fine
Edit: Just in case someone reads this and is bewildered this article should help.
Heinz Karst fought in Poland and on the eastern front and received an Iron Cross so he fought and probably did a bunch of warcrimes during WW2.
Erich Topp was in the NSDAP and SS and only after the war was critical probably because his own aunt got thrown into a KZ, real 'I didn't think the leopards were going to eat my face' moment there.
Again Scholz thought it was ok to honor warcriminals and nazis because they were really good soldier, after working in my neighbours garden a bit helping uproot a tree I will amend one thing I said. Germany is not a clown country it's an entire circus.
