Does anybody know of a proper alternative to Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV sticks, Roku sticks, etc.?

At the moment, I’m still using a Fire TV Stick with my old TV, but ideally, I’d like to replace it with something European. Is there anything?

Requirements are:

  • Runs a Jellyfin client
  • Apps for typical streaming services like Disney+, which I won’t be able to get rid of yet (I have people in the house who love Disney).
  • Wi-Fi, ideally
  • remote control so that we can control it easily from the couch

Do you know of a good interface/OS/whatever for it that would allow easily using Jellyfin and Disney+ via a remote control?

LibreELEC is a Linux option if you want a full-featured device. LibreELEC (or Kodi, which is the application that actually does the heavy lifting) has both Jellyfin and Disney+ add-ons (although I can't personally vouch for how well they work).

Android TV is also available for the Pi and is another fine option.

You can run Android on it. Then you have your pick of apps.

That sounds promising. Any idea how I could remote control it, though?

However one thing you need to be aware of, is that most apps will throttle your resolution to 720p with a setup like that.

There is basically no way to get proper streaming from these apps except by buying a completely premade android device, and then never ever messing with it.

The DRM system they use for this is called Widevine.

Get a USB dongle - you can probably use a generic one (I have one in my Xbox) but the Pi Hut has a few accessories which will be guaranteed to work. So pop this in and you should be able to use your old remotes.

Thanks, that looks promising 👍

Jellyfin is a nice enough interface, don’t know if you integrate Disney+
