I think it specifically refers to a casual relationship where one person caught feelings
That is at least a bit more specific than a fling.
It's used pejoratively. On the surface it's a relationship without labels. In practice one person catches feelings and their friends use this word to convince them to find someone who will actually commit to them.
I think its just “you live your life and I’ll live mine, and we’ll squeeze bits of relationship when it’s convenient for both of us”
wouldn't that just be 'friends with benefits?'
Fwb doesn't have romantic elements. The "benefits" is sex, not any other relationship stuff. The friendship doesn't even have to be a particularly good one.
