Idk, I guess I don't see the point of the distinction, they're both still defending authoritarian atrocities along ideological lines.
Unless the point is that they're nominally communist and that somehow makes them uniquely or especially bad?
If that's the case then it more seems like we're being selectively critical of communism, not authoritarianism.
The distinction matters, that's why it's a whole separate word.

tankie is has a specific meaning, ie a communist who will enforce his will with a barrel of the tank, refering when USSR invaded its EE satellites to prevent popular liberalization.
