10 years ago, Couchsurfing was like this, I don't know how it evolved since then
Since they decided you need to pay to use the website, everybody left. A few dedicated users went to the alternatives such as trustroots or warm showers but most people vanished.
12 years ago I used Airbnb to lodge around Japan for a trip, just slept on some dude’s couch, we went out for drinks. It was pretty sweet back then.
