Here's to you, AnandTech - thank you for the detailed smartphone reviews all these years.

Is it supposed to be like a dock? I’m using Nova Launcher and then I found the Edge Panel and it is a bit much but for those who use the default launcher is that the idea?

Sony Xperia smartphones look so good on paper. So why is it that we don't recommend them? Here's our answer to that and a brief 2023 review of the Sony Xperia 1 IV.

Back when I was a high-school student in this 2017 - 2019 era, HMD released a lot of different devices, including a diverse smartphone portfolio covering every segment imaginable.

What caused them to drop this strategy in such a short time, and went forward with a strategy focusing on affordable smart-and-feature-phones? For example, the 9 PureView was their last flagship released in 2019, and its successor 9.3 PureView never materialized.

I suppose you can blame it on declining sales - from what I could find, HMD's sales indeed took a nosedive in 2020, but a more concrete answer would be much appreciated here.

Why is the exposure time/ shutter speed for my phone capped at 1/2 (half a second)? I would like to take photos with an exposure time of up to 30 seconds. Even when installing other apps, like GCam or Open Camera, it is not possible to increase the exposure time. I have an Fairphone 4 with Android 13.

In the screenshot you can see that the exposure time (S) is at the maximum value.

Do you have the same "issue" as me, or know how to fix it?

Following adding the functionality for new app installs earlier this year, the Google Play Store is once rolling out support...

Hi all, so as per title, when I use browser app to make a pwa or 'add to homescreen' it works, but then opens the home page not the actual link I had created. From memory there was a hack where you would put your phone offline, airplane mode I think' and then it would save the link. But doesn't work anymore. Any1 have any solutions? Tx

Hi all,

Okay so my Galaxy Tab A7 Lite has arrived. I did some searching and it seems like there are a million options as far as replacing / hacking the rom.

So, all I want to do is have root access, and be rid of any bloat that’s built in. I prefer whatever is most tried and true, and whatever does not have any iffy components still. Like, I want everything to function without glitches, I want to get the most out of my hardware, and other than that, I really don’t want a 100-step process.

So, recommends? What’s available that’s very reliable and what does it offer me?

(Eg: GSI+Root, Lineage, Havoc, et al)

I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

The same way it does in Google maps, and in Waze. But I can't seem to find a setting on the phone that will do that for any other apps, and I can't find any information through internet searches that leave me that direction.

As usual, they show me what they think I ought to be looking for, which is how to lock an app. Not the question I asked, Google (or anybody else).

Is it impossible or does anybody have a tip? Not looking to go down the unlocking my phone root access path either. It's not that big a deal, I could turn on trusted devices, or extend unlock, but those aren't the solutions I'm looking for.

What IRC client do you all recommend for Android? I'm looking for a non-paid option that will allow me to connect to a passworded host. Any suggestions?

This stuff drives me so mad. I recently have noticed higher than usual over-night drain on my phone and decided to investigate a bit. So I connected my phone to my machine, closed out all the apps waited a few seconds and ran adb shell top with a few parameters to see what is actually running.

And would you look at that, despite the phone telling me that nothing is running at all, the microsoft copilot, ebay kleinanzeigen (a german craigslist), google photos and google search either have not been closed or somehow started themselves. Also I have not received any notifications for these Apps in the last few seconds.

First of all, how are these Apps even doing it? With the two Google Apps I kinda get it, since they are System Apps, but in the case of ebay Kleinanzeigen and microsoft copilot it makes 0 sense since they are regular 3rd party Apps. How can they bypass seemingly all optimizations and start themselves (I haven't used the Microsoft copilot app in months). Also is there any way to prevent this from happening or at the very least get some kind of summary how often these Apps ran in the background. Sadly the Android battery information page is totally useless. With many of these Apps I don't care about notifications or anything and I never want them to run after I close them in the task manager.

I installed a screen protector for the first time on Monday. I've been having issues getting my fingerprint to work and just would use my pin to unlock. This morning Android popped up a notification saying "Using a screen protector? Click here to increase touch sensitivity!" Pretty awesome.

Now stop asking me to use Gemini.

Hello 😊 Do you have in mind an android app that allows you to make diagrams?

Even something simple that lets you edit and view text graph like mermaid.js.org or other text format.

And if it's possible to integrate these tools with markdown notes that would be huge!!!! 🤗🤗🤗

Thanks for your boosts and answers!

For exemple on desktop I use draw.io or zettlr.com

Hi all,

I've been messing around with some old firesticks and really want root to remove all this bs

What do you think about buying some cheap android box and flashing lineage?

Any things I should look out for? My only hard requirement is custom ROMs

Thanks in advance

TL;DR

  • The Android 15 source code will be released next week, according to multiple sources.
  • The source code will allow Android platform developers to build modified versions of Android 15.
  • Major OEMs have already had access to Android 15’s source code, giving them a head start on preparing updates.

The YouTube mobile app now supports sharing video timestamps automatically, sparing users the need to manually edit links.

Wireless Screen Casting / Sharing? (links.hackliberty.org)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Hi all,

What do you use to wirelessly project your screen?

I have sunshine / moonlight set up and that works alright but I'm told there are simpler ways and I'm behind the times :p

Is this a thing in FOSS / Linux land? All suggestions welcome and appreciated.

EDIT: I use Graphene on a Pixel 8A

Hi,

I created another user on my custom rom Android (aka Multiple users)

Unfortunately when doing so the system do not adapt the permission of the sdcard and some other directory, thus the new user can't access them :/

So I wanted to "remote" terminal into my android device from my computer.

How are you achieving this ? ( without 3thparty apps please ! )

Thanks.

Hi, I have a primary school girl who wants her share of gaming on the family android tablet.

While finding open source or commercial games with no ads that boys like is doable, I haven't been able to find the kind of games a girl wants:

  • with cute graphics
  • where you care for dolls or pet
  • no ads or subscriptions, no endless DLC.

Do you have any recommendations for android games that fit the bill?

The image is a screenshot of cry babies, a game that she'd like to play very much but constantly nags you to buy new content.

I've searched elsewhere without a valid option. TIA.

Adding 16 KB Page Size to Android (android-developers.googleblog.com)
submitted 2 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Android 15 has been refactored to support using 16 KB page sizes, and file systems like EROFS and F2FS have been made compatible.

A page is the granularity at which an operating system manages memory. Most CPUs today support a 4 KB page size and so the Android OS and applications have historically been built and optimized to run with a 4 KB page size. ARM CPUs support the larger 16 KB page size. When Android uses this larger page size, we observe an overall performance boost of 5-10% while using ~9% additional memory.

In order to improve the operating system performance overall and to give device manufacturers an option to make this trade-off, Android 15 can run with 4 KB or 16 KB page sizes.

The very first 16 KB enabled Android system will be made available on select devices as a developer option. This is so you can use the developer option to test and fix (if needed) your applications to prepare for Android devices with 16 KB page sizes in the near future.
