I asked my parents to get me evaluated as a kid and my mom said it wasn't real. At 32, I got evaluated and was diagnosed. Told my dad today and he's like "no shit? You got it from me" Well thanks for sticking up for me as a kid, dad lol

For anyone struggling here in the US, I highly recommend looking into alcoholics/narcotics anonymous or SMART recovery (a secular version of AA/NA). They're free! I know it's not for everyone, but just want to put it out there in case there's people unaware. You're not alone, and it can help to have the community ๐Ÿ’œ

I've considered checking into rehab recently or just a mental health institution, but the idea of the cost is enough to keep me pushing through without. I have experience with SMART recovery, though, if anyone has questions. They use evidence based tools with most of it available for free online. The workbook is like $10. It has made a difference, but it can feel overwhelming and takes time.
