I remember payin 70 cents a year for whatsapp some decade ago. They should have never been allowed to sell to facebook.

I remember the popups asking to start paying or they will delete my account, I've always let them run out and my account got renewed for free for another year, until they made it entirely free.
That was common practice, I genuinely don't know anyone that actually paid the fee.

I did. 70 cents for a year was practically nothing compared to using SMS.

And if they enforced it, it would have been a sustainable business model.

Tell them all ads have to be just a photo of Schultz. Latest product? Schultz. Newest car? Schultz. Female hygiene products? Schultz. Watch the whole ads industry burn.

Which Schultz?

Not everyone lives in Deutschland.

Doesn't matter. If all ads are a picture of Schultz, you'd install an adblocker.

Please put a stop to the ad supported web, EU

What alternatives are there?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Only other alternatives I could think of would be just straight up harvesting and selling your customers data or paywalling your website, unless you're willing to lose profit.

I’d be fine with either paywalls and donations. Ad support is nice theoretically, but we’ve seen that we can’t be trusted not to turn that into a hellhole of popups and broken experiences to maximise revenue.

Only thing I could think of is something like adding an extra 10 or 20 to your internet bill and your isp automatically sends money to the sites you visit based on times visited, but it would require SO much work, and so many problems to solve.
