The groups say the legislation was not necessary to protect the public and harms people most in need of legal name changes

The changes were prompted after B.C. United Leader Kevin Falcon introduced a proposed private member's bill to change the act after learning that B.C. child killer Allan Schoenborn was legally permitted to change his name to Ken John Johnson.

Schoenborn was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his children, aged five, eight and 10, in Merritt, B.C., in 2008, but he was later found to be not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder.

Convicted child-killer Allan Schoenborn legally changed his name in 2021, and it only became public this week

Seems like the legislation was necessary based on the fact nothing prevented a mentally unwell child murderer from changing their name, which happened years before it was found out.

I am so sick and tired of people who refuse to admit that safe guards are needed to prevent people from abusing systems.

Numerous things require criminal record checks. Will these same people refuse to work because of a required criminal record check? Will they refuse one if they wish to adopt a child? How about refusing a passport for travel?

If you aren't willing to get a criminal record check to change your name it isn't that important to you.

The new law requires those aged 12 and up to undergo a criminal record check before they can get their name changed.

Excuse me what??

Of course, why am I not surprised that the conservatives/neoliberal party would propose such a crudly drafted bill to target both guilty and innocent people
