This is so infuriating. Don't they have a principle of proportionality or something similar in the US?

Yeah, they do. It turns out if someone is repeatedly stomping your face into the concrete, you can respond with equally lethal force.

They do. This is the defense attorney defending his client, and lawyers will say anything imaginable to possibly defend someone.

It’s up to the jury and judge to determine if he was acting in self defense now.
