I don't think it's too soon. In fact the faster we put them all firmly in the past the better! I have a bit too much on my plate to do it myself at the moment but have you heard of Bookwyrm? It's the fediverse's equivalent of goodreads and I'm sure you could find some readers/writers there who have read those books and would like to talk about them :)
UK Politics
General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both [email protected] and [email protected] .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
[email protected] appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(
Is it too soon to “book club” something like Bercow’s autobiography, Seldon on May(not) at 10, or the like?
UK Politics Book Club? Could be worth a punt but see what the Mods say.
It may be way too soon, but a friend was given Liz Truss' book as a joke but was thoroughly entertained by how outrageous it was and I have thought about borrowing it. I'd rather give that a spin than wade through some self-serving tosh from BoJo.
Alternate suggestion, try something less direct - I was given a copy of James O’Brien’s How They Broke Britain recently and haven't cracked into it - that covers a lot of The Unpleasantness but in a more digestible form.
I ran one on the other place if you want some ideas on how to format it. There's also a lot of good books in the suggestions lists.
In the end I stopped because it felt like participation rates dwindled fast, but it did a good job at highlighting an interesting range of books.
I suspect participation won't be that great here for now either but, like a lot of things on the Fediverse, you have to keep pushing on to gain momentum. That said, this is our most visited community, so if we are going to make it work anywhere it's here.
I think this is a great idea, and I'd happily sticky a promo or decision/voting thread.
I don't think Flamingos will have any objections either, but I will ask when I have a sec.
