I went to the Palestine sit-in at VU today and was a bit disappointed. It was not as radical as at UvA. There were only speeches and chants. It seemed more like a lunch break. One of the speechers was a teacher who teaches international law and he started by saying that he is in favor of a two state solution. Then he kept comparing Israel with Russia.

But since VU is notably more right wing than UvA, I guess it's surprising they even have a Palestine protest. Hopefully the VU protestors have something more radical planned for next week. Since they were making banners as well, I feel like they are planning something.

Twitter has one of the worst search engines I've ever seen. They changed the URL to x and I wanted to see what people are saying. But if you look up the word "Twitter" you're hit with a bunch of random shit with a lot of likes. If you look up Twitter URL, all the comments are Japanese, Indian, Russian. I guess it's designed that way; you're not meant to find the stuff Elon doesn't want you to see like the original site name.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

For a brief time they introduced a comical URL switch issue. They wanted all things that contained twitter.com to be shown as x.com. But they did that terribly. So if someone registered a domain like for example "netflitwitter.com" and put a fake Netflix login page on it, then posted a tweet with their link, it would be displayed as netflix.com but redirect you to the phishing site

These university protests and how the administration is violently imposing the cops on students is making me worried about my future. Right now I’m still in undergrad but I wont be for much longer and will be moving on to my Masters soon (in a little over a year I should be done) but the schools that have graduate and doctoral programs are all cracking down on students hard and I don’t know if I want to go to a school that does shit like that (this is Canada, by the way).

I would like to study abroad but money is an issue and so are my dogs. Money because I am actually on disability so travelling is restricted in general so I would assume leaving the country to study is also prohibited (or at least I would be kicked off and be left with no income); the dogs are only an emotional issue as I don’t want them to be hurt on the plane if I leave the country (I made a post lamenting about this, it was stupid lol). Can I study in a different province? Sure, but again, money is still the main problem. I am more than willing to get a job during my masters and doctorate but losing that support system sucks. This is a weird rant but it’s my genuine feelings. Maybe one or some of you relate, I don’t know.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

Sending you positive feelings! I'm sure you will still be able to do your Masters there, they will not shut down programs even with their attitude.

Sucks that you can't really go abroad, but understandable that you don't want to leave your dogs behind.

I guess there's also remote classes but I don't know anything about them

I a completely unexpected (not) turn of events some anarchist group claimed the destruction of some shit at Amsterdam University. Because that's how you achieve thing. Smashing screens and stuff.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

They achieved assisting the police in justifying their violent crackdown. I read somewhere that they arrested one of the "ninjas" but I can't find anything now.

#JetDidNothingWrong and ofc he's the only one in all of the Last Airbender that dies. I can't wait to see how badly he's fumbled in the shitty Netflix adaptation

I really wish I could just drop reddit, it's a truly awful place that consistently makes me miserable

But there's so many topics and communities I just have no way of keeping informed about without it

As President Biden says, American workers and businesses can outcompete anyone—as long as they have fair competition. But for too long, China’s government has used unfair, non-market practices. China’s forced technology transfers and intellectual property theft have contributed to its control of 70, 80, and even 90 percent of global production for the critical inputs necessary for our technologies, infrastructure, energy, and health care—creating unacceptable risks to America’s supply chains and economic security. Furthermore, these same non-market policies and practices contribute to China’s growing overcapacity and export surges that threaten to significantly harm American workers, businesses, and communities.

What president Biden is saying here is that Americans can't outcompete anyone without having monopoly on intellectual property lmao. Is it fair competition when one party holds the know-how and extracts rent from it? Of course not, when the playing field was leveled they didn't have a chance against China.

Tfw the commies know more about capitalism than the capitalists themselves

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Huge fan of my medication monthly cost increasing by about 50% for the second time in under a year. We love living in a constant state of crushing financial pressure don’t we folks

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

Is costplusdrugs.com available where you are? They're about as good as it gets under capitalism.

What book are we reading this week?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

Avatar Yangchen books. I've only read non-fiction for years and am giving myself a break from the serious. FWIW her book is effectively about capitalism bad (but ofc it's still politically awful, she wants to reform the system, etc.)

Mostly stuff on how to create an insect friendly Urban Garden (balcony in my case). I finally have the space to do so.

The Netherlands is absolutely doing a fascism speedrun it seems and the student protests are highlighting it tremendously. Never in my life have I seen people justify police beating down a protest against genocide with even politicians intimidating journalists.

Like, over here universities are getting occupied as well but apart from some mellow reactions there hasn't been any trouble (yet). The Netherlands is just collectively losing it. But seeing the election results that shouldn't be a surprise.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Who would've thought the fucking Netherlands would turn towards fascism again. (counting their time under Nazi occupation)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

The Netherlands had the highest rate of voluntary enrollments in the SS. It's the most openly racist country I've ever seen and I'm older than most.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I heard on the radio my town now also has a university protest will check it out after work

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)
