You can do the same with the regular android phone app, why bother with a third party application? Can they really be trusted?

The android app blocks unidentified callers and blacklisted numbers. This doesn't affect calls from spoofed numbers, and I haven't found the app's spam detection to be effective enough.
Oh really, I could have sworn there was a feature to block anyone not in my contact list. Will check it out.
Yeah honestly my first suspect in this scenario would be Google itself.
Google could be selling it as a live number fom the servers seeing outgoing activity, in the same way a Gmail is sold as an active address.
