At the time of writing Summit for Lemmy should be completely open source.

After a lot of contemplation I've decided to open source the app. There are still some changes that probably need to happen before it can be considered "FOSS" but this is a huge step I think.

As I'm voiced my opinions on this previously, the main repository for Summit will not be to the public for PRs. If you encounter bugs or have any feature requests please continue to send them through the proper channels (ideally to this community).

Enjoy~~

I love this!!! I recently switched from Summit to Thunder because it bothered me that it's not FOSS. But frankly, I prefer Summit and I missed it. It looks like I can switch back to it. Thank you!

Just the day I decided Summit is the client for me, I only wished if it would be opensource... lol

Can you wish for some more things please

Cool. Any plans on publishing this to F-Droid?

Why did you open 2 repositories?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

The repository didnt use to be public and I wanted a way for people who didnt want to use Google Play to get the app. I did some research and found out people often used obtainium which works with github. So I decided to make a 2nd repository which I can make public and just release all the APKs to it.

@[email protected] thank you hugely for both the software, and committing to open source!

No problem. Thanks for the support!

That's amazing, thank you!

Congratulations that you finally decide to open source it, I hope the nature of Lemmy didn't force your hand :p (joking... A bit).

In real honesty I can't wait to see the big improvements the app gets along the way, you have pretty much perfected this app with each update and if the community can help you to improve it further it just means you are gonna keep spreading the love with this app ;)

There are still some changes that probably need to happen before it can be considered "FOSS" but this is a huge step I think.

The source is available and the license is definitely free. What else is there keeping it from being FOSS?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Oh I thought it couldn't have proprietary dependencies but that's not apparently true. Nevermind. I guess it is FOSS now.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think you're getting confused with f-droid compliant

I cannot find a definitive answer on whether or not a program with a proprietary dependency can still be considered FOSS. But you did?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I don't know about definitive...

[–] [email protected] 19 points 3 days ago

That's great, I like how Summit looks, and that's another very big green flag for it!

Whoa, shit. That's awesome of you and also remember: most people are idiots and the dumbest ones are loudest.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why this disclaimer? Is this something that people that open their projects should know?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Whenever you give your free time and energy to build something open source for the world, there are always some people who say “why aren’t you giving me 10x more, you lazy dev” 😅

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I should have known 😆

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think dev was skeptical about judgement for their code

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

I'm skeptical that the code would be bad, considering Summit is a top-notch app.
