I wanted to like Night Country so much. Great cast, great acting, not even a bad story at its core, but for some reason it just came out... kinda meh. They leaned waaaaay too hard into hinting at a supernatural element, which all turned out to be nothing. It was very anticlimactic.

I loved it.
I discounted 100% of the supernatural bullshit as just a manifestation of the overwhelming force of the ambient environment tearing apart everyone's sanity.
It was glorious.
The cast were all second fiddle to Alaska, who was chewing the scenery in ways that would make Pacino blush.
That was exactly my problem with it. The core mystery was really solid, the characters were interesting and the performances were great, but the attempts to recreate the vague feeling of "Something unnatural might be happening here" from the original True Detective just did not work at all. Like you said, hinted way too hard for literally zero payoff, and not even an attempt to hand wave it away.
I don't hate it, I'd even recommend it still, just with that caveat.
Terrible show
Never have I seen such disparity in critics reviews and audience feedback. And because it did “well”, they’re bringing back the showrunner for the next one. What a waste.
