Oh for fuck sake.
If a child drowned at swimming lessons, that would be an absolute tragedy... but mandating some kind of safety device, with the outcome being fewer kids receive swimming lessons, is obviously going to increase the risks to kids.
Bike helmet laws are also demonstrably a huge self-own for public health. All the data we have shows very clearly that helmets don't reduce the severity of injuries and impede a cycling culture.
I've been hit by a car, and even with a helmet, I had a bump on my head (which is why the ambos who attended managed to convince me eventually to come hospital for 5 hours). My skull would have been cracked open if it wasn't for the helmet. My brother was hit on his motorcycle in a hit and run too.. He's lucky he survived at all. It's awesome even when ducking branches and such
It's not impeding cycle culture at all. Literally takes 2s to put on a helmet.. how is that impeding anything?
Your advice will kill people.. Anyone who has ever fallen off a bike knows this.. Try running on gravel in bare foot if you want to get an idea of just how effective helmets are. Please don't spread bullshit like this. You can even get MIPS helmets which further improve the safety
That being said, Chain and sprocket guards, I have no issue being made mandatory on new bikes (at least so there is a transition period). But, just checking amazon, they actually seem to be cheap anyway. So maybe not a big issue (but, not sure how badly people are struggling these days)
Terrible idea. Maybe you could mandate it on children's bikes, but absolutely not on all bikes. Sports cyclists would murder you if you tried to do that.
There will always be a small number of people that complain.. People also complained about seat belts..
In reality, I suspect very few people would care otherwise
If you consider that on a lot of other types of races there is mandatory equipment too which changes, I don't think they'd care, provided that it affects all of them equally. At an olympic level or national level, maybe different, but otherwise, doubtful..
There are even people complaining that helmets "are less safe" right now. It's really a nothing issue once bikes have them by default
