I would say, the steering of the space ship was a huge negative. Almost made me give up on the game right away. What made me give up 2 hours in was the stupid poison fog which killed you instantly but You could only see it with a static camera from a few meters away. What an unbelievably dumb mechanic.
Whelp... spoilers I guess? The space ship has an autopilot, and you only need to actually steer it in certain sections. As for the "poison fog," once again there are only a small number of areas where it actually becomes important to use the camera to navigate it. Most of the "fog" can be easily circumvented entirely, and the most significant area where you can't is entirely optional.
If those are the two things that you found difficult, I'd recommend giving it a second chance. Also, there is an extensive mod scene for the game, and you can literally remove things which are giving you grief if you really want too.
I started the game at least 4 times before uninstalling. No point starting again. I just read the plot summary.
I get you. I played for about 4 hours before giving up. It was kind of boring and I heavily strongly disliked the mechanics. The story didn't get me at all at that point. Maybe one day when the universe thinks it's my time.
I haven't been spoiled yet, though.
Thankfully the community is actually really good with spoilers.
I bought it on sale and it sat on my computer for literally years before I finally dove in, and it just so happened to be the perfect time in my life to engage with it. I don't know how such synchronicity occurs, but I hope you also find your time to enjoy it, for once you do get into it, it really is worth every moment, even the really frustrating parts.
Honestly, people complain about the ship controls but it's not bad at all. Play around with it for 10 minutes and you'll be zipping around in no time.
I heard a games podcast, where one of the hosts played the game with kbm. He really struggled, especially in DB, because the thrust has no step-ups. By that time it was an annoying flaw with the game and there was only a mod to fix that, which was, by itself, broken.
Played the game on a PS4 a while ago and loved everything about it.
No way worked for me. First I tried kbm. Then I bought an Xbox pad specifically for this game. It got better but was still too annoying.
I am sorry to hear that, because for me, the game was a really special experience.
Yes, the ship controls needed a bit getting used to it, but when you get the hang of it, it's really easy to navigate. And I loved it, that they tried to immitate real sky mechanics and didn't make the ship behave like a boat or racing car.
But as far as I heard, you are not alone with the struggle.
DB is just painful all around until you figure out a method that works for you, which is the intention I'm pretty sure. The way I solved it, I never used anything but full thrust or no thrust anyways.
The part that I struggled with at first was trying to reach other planets, which is legitimately difficult without the autopilot.
I mean, that's the entire point of the autopilot mechanic. That's how players are meant to travel between planets.
Right. I'm just saying I can somewhat understand it if they, like me, managed to overlook that at first. Didn't take me too long to figure out my problem, but someone who gets more easily flustered might have a bigger problem with it.
