updating symbols does not erase history

You're right.

Updating symbols does allow for better reflecting a modern understanding of history, though.

does my comment makes it sound like i am against it? symbols can be whatever they want it to be, it is their nation

does my comment makes it sound like i am against it?

Not explicitly, though it does read like a comment that could be made by someone who is against changing symbols in recognition of some aspects of history.

Are you trying to argue for honoring Columbus, or just being contrarian to try to sound smart?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

My interpretation:

History happened.

That doesn't change.

Changing symbols doesn't change that.

Columbus doesn't deserve honour. Nor a place on the coat of arms.

Columbus was an asshole.

History still happened.

Trinidad now chooses who / what they wish to celebrate and honour.

History is not deleted.

neither, you're overthinking

It does change the way people think about history though

But it might confuse people into thinking the Spanish genocide of native people was a bad thing.
