tl;dr

Heat building up inside the thrusters may be causing Teflon seals to bulge, restricting the flow of propellant.

I thought the joke was spot on. Those furry engineers seem to be able to spot even the slightest hint of bulging. "Something's happening there. We should...investigate it."
