Technically not free, but rather pay what you want. You can still grab the original version from the official website.
Iirc the Plus version was originally made because of consoles. The original game was very PC specific, as you needed to
to be able to complete it, and to find some otherwise hidden content. That's of course not possible on consoles...

I think there was an initial release that was free, but they later rereleased with additional content and started charging. Hence the “Plus” in the name.
Ahh, makes sense. Because I distinctly remember just downloading it on a whim when it was new and going in completely blind, save for the cryptic "not for the faint of heart" warning. Absolutely wild ride, but seems like it kinda blows now that it's extremely well known what the game is
It really sucks when you get spoiled on the big twist in a game you're planning to play
I once randomly got spoiled for persona 4 when watching a tips video for the best way to improve stats. That was a big letdown, considering I was halfway through it already
