World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Before the "what about Hamas?!?" people get all upset-
People on Lemmy don’t criticize Hamas…. Just Biden.
All my homies hate Hamas. It’s the default you barely have to mention. The sky is blue, fuck Hamas, water is wet.
I'll note here that we Americans have no influence whatsoever on what Hamas does, but allegedly, the President represents us. It makes sense to criticize Biden, whereas criticism of Hamas is just farting into the wind.
Or we could all just criticize the real bad guy which is Israel
I hate terrorism. Therefore I hate Hamas, who are terrorists. And therefore I hate a state which uses terrorism to clear land, which Israel is doing: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/magazine/israel-west-bank-settler-violence-impunity.html
That is absolute nonsense.
What people don't do is feel the need to criticize Hamas every time Israel is criticized.
I see a lot of Hamas criticism in threads about Israel. I can't remember the last time I saw a post about Hamas though.
So make one. Problem solved.
But mainly, you don't see posts about Hamas because they main thing they're doing right now is dying and that isn't exactly news.
It's always the same disingenuous bullshit. I'd wager most people on here couldn't care less about Hamas. All Hamas members could drop dead right now and I wouldn't lose a second of sleep.
But somehow we're all Hamas supporters because we don't put a "I hate Hamas"-disclaimer above every comment about Israel. It's so terribly low-effort and transparent.
It's a standard Fascist trope to claim that "those who aren't with us are against us" and Zionists are hard-Fascists, only beaten by the Nazis.
So of course they constantly, relentlessly, mindlessly use that trope by, amongst others, accusing those who criticize the Zionist Genocide of supporting those they claim are their enemies (which, funnilly enough, they actually financed), Hamas.
If you pay attention to Zionist arguments, every single one of them is a propaganda trick out of Himmler's little book of tricks.
Me: I don't want to see children and civilians dying over this war.
"What about children and civilians in Israel?"
I said 'children and civilans'. I don't want to see any such people die. I did not qualify with a nationality.
"Yeah, but you didn't say 'Israel'."
I don't need to. I don't care where a person is born, or what's on their passport. I just don't want them being killed. I want to stop seeing innocent people killed.
"You think people who support Hamas are innocent?"
There's no winning, I'm afraid.
I'll falsify that by criticising Hamas.
Hamas are terrorists and they suck. They need to fuck off and let Palestinians not get involved in terrifying violence.
I agree with that.
Wherever people call out the October 7th death count that always makes me notice I can't find data on how many Israeli civilians have died since October 7th. It's almost like this has never actually been retaliatory.
If with October 7 you include the weekend until including October 9 and account people that died of injuries inflicted in that itme, then the number is zero. So Israeli civillians that were killed after the events commonly referred to as October 7.
Also for the number of October 7 it is conveniently ignored by pro Israel media, that about 400-500 of the Israelis killed were active duty soldiers. So the number of genuine Israeli victims of Hamas terror is around 700. Of these iirc. about 30-35 were children. So basically the rate of Palestinian childrens butchered by IDF to pass any random afternoon in the past 8 months.
It's sure as hell not proportional.
