Why even make the whole Roman empire up? It's like the flat Earth shit. What's the point in hiding this? There's just no logic to those conspiracy bullshit.

It's not about the information itself, it's about getting the people who are dumb enough to believe this to question all of their education.

"If they were wrong about this what else were they wrong about?"

Whoever started this little 'rumor' is heavily suspect.
