I was born a bit before you and remember everything before the internet. In ways it was worse before. I have to wonder what you think we don't have now that we did before? We can make telephone calls on the internet now! And see the other person! By the internet I think you mean maybe web culture? We have FOSS and Lemmy now. Although yes there seems to be fewer hobbyists around. There was a golden age of hacking proprietary devices that seems to have died down. I miss more custom firmware.
You are correct, I am actually referring to web culture. Thank you for pointing that out, I will correct my post.
