Can't they just fuck off? How the hell does destabilising their neighbours help them? They're fucked anyway, whether they manage to cause a war with the EU or they don't.
Or do they feel like this time surely Russia will keep their word and not occupy their allies?
When trying to understand Belarusian politics, the main question to ask is "how does Lukasjenko stay alive and free".
He needs to stay in power, and he's only staying in power at the mercy of Putin. And he needs his subjects to have a perception of crisis in order for them to accept his bullshit.
If he allows things to get better he'll be removed from power, at which point he'll either be imprisoned or killed.
Loyalty to the nation is loyalty to the government, loyalty to the party in power. If you question the party in power, you question the government and country. Traitors will not be tolerated. Mother Russia bleeds for you! And so you must bleed for Mother Russia!
