Come to Quark’s, Quark’s is Fun!

General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.

Original post

I kinda realized this isn't Reddit, so as long as things stay polite and organized there's no reason us Admins need to gatekeep the wiki. We're paying for it, might as well let people use it right? Anyone with a valid can register as an editor.

Ideally we'd like our wiki to serve as a sort of fan-resource hub and on-boarding for newbies (both Trek and Lemmy/fediverse), but feel free to make anything there your heart desires (the Admin team reserves the right to keep things tidy).

Also, the permission system around Bookstack (our wiki software) is a little complex so if you're running into a permissions issue, don't hesitate to reach out to @[email protected], @[email protected] or myself so we can get it sorted.

I have a very hard time reconciling contemporary european tendens to right wing to my own moral compass. How do you guys (if feeling the same) deal with it? If you feel different , i would also like to hear your thoughts.

We'll be testing out a monitoring tool that should help us identify/isolate minor outages as they arise.

Sometimes it's hard to tell when a crash/loading situation is on our end, or a temporary slowdown (usually caused by a spike of fediverse activity), or just general Lemmy-is-still-pretty-new weirdness and this should help us stay on top of it more quickly.

Appreciate those of you who have been alerting us on Mastodon when you're seeing an error!

It still has to be ratified, but it sounds like everyone's going to get back to work.

Goals for this wiki:

To serve as a hub and bridge for fans to find and connect with online resources of the broader Trek fandom and Fediverse. Think: stuff that's not a good fit for Memory Alpha or Wikipedia.

Some cool pages:

Want to contribute?

We're accepting pitches for community resources that people may want to contribute. Here are examples of sorts of things we're looking for, but we're open to any idea, it doesn't even need to be about Star Trek!

  • Guide to the best LGBT episodes
  • Other good Star Trek websites (Ex Astris, TrekMovie, etc)
  • Where to stream Trek
  • S-tier blank Trek meme templates

If you'd like a page of your own, or want help expanding/maintain existing pages, comment here or message an admin with your idea and we can get you set up with a Wiki account. Cheers!

Cheers

The three episodes will drop weekly starting Saturday, November 25, with the release of “The Star Beast,” followed by “Wild Blue Yonder” on December 2, and “The Giggle” on December 9. The special episodes will be the first as part of a major broadcasting deal between the BBC and Disney to stream exclusively outside of the UK and Ireland on Disney+. They will continue to broadcast on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer in those regions—which will also see the debut of the first episode of Doctor Who’s revived behind-the-scenes program, Doctor Who Unleashed, on November 25 to accompany the broadcast of “The Star Beast.”

I can't seem to get past the captachas - there seem to only be two that alternate when you hit refresh, and neither seems to accept the correct answer (using the audio to confirm). Is anyone else running into the same issue?

I've been meaning to make a QL post for a little while, and this is as good an excuse as any.

If anyone here has been thinking about giving the new series a look, I'd recommend it - I find it fairly engaging.

My main caveat is that it's very much a "network show," and plays it safe in a lot of ways. That said, it still manages to be pretty entertaining.

In terms of comparison to the original series:

  • This series is very much a sequel series to the original - Sam Beckett is still out there, and gets mentioned semi-frequently. Ernie Hudson's character, Magic Williams, is someone Sam leapt into way back in 1990's "The Leap Home, Part II".

  • That said, there have been some changes to how the leaps work. The Waiting Room of the original series is gone, and Ben's physical body doesn't leap to the past the way Sam's did - instead, it's more of a possession scenario, with Ben inhabiting the Leapee's body for the duration of the Leap. The other big one is that Ben's not restricted to leaping within his own lifetime the way Sam (mostly) was.

  • The format of the show is also a bit different, with a larger ensemble cast in the form of Ben's support team in the "present" - they get a lot more screentime, which is where the more serialized elements tend to play out. This also means Ben's leaps can get a bit less screentime, which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your point of view and on the story being told.

At the end of the day, I think it's a pretty fun show, and worthy of the original. It's not going to be winning any awards for innovation, but there are worse ways to spend your time.

One thing that I think would be nice would be to have a true plethora of custom star trek emojis available for us to use here. (Perhaps this is already a thing and I just dont know about it?)

I think having the ability for users to post an image (and a name for the potential emoji) for consideration for emojification would be quite enjoyable (especially for the risa community). Of course, there would need to be an Emoji Science Officer who has responsibility for the emojis, both for creating emojis themselves and adding emojis suggested by users.

Logistically, this would depend on the admins either acting as ESO or vetting and appointing an ESO from the userbase. There would also need to be an emoji reference resource, maybe a pinned and locked megathread with every emoji in it?

This is, of course, a suggestion, and only applicable if the admins both desire this and have time to deal with being ESO or vet and appoint an ESO.

Regards,

That One Redshirt

I don't know if it's just me, but I've been experiencing quite a bit of sluggishness and errors (failure to post, failure to mark as read, failure to fetch comments, etc), my feed seems to get stuck for long periods of time without updating, and any time I try to open my profile view, it can take a full minute (it might be partially due to how many posts/comments I have). Sometimes it's taking 5-10 attempts to successfully upload an image to post. Is there anything going on?

If it makes a difference, I've been on mobile and using Voyager.
