Over the past year or so I’ve been playing with the idea of a decentralised social platform based on your location. By putting physical location at the centre of the experience, such a platform could be used to bring communities together and provide a source of local information when travelling. Please let me know what you guys think.

Hi!

For the past ~2 months I've been working on my own implementation of an ActivityPub server, as a personal challenge. It's finally come to the point where I could set up a public federation testing instance (https://testpilot.shinolabs.com/) which surprisingly just works.

While it doesn't have a frontend yet (due to my severely lacking skills), Toki supports the Mastodon API set, allowing most fedi clients to connect to it.

It's been a wild journey going from barely understanding ActivityPub and ActivityStreams to having something that actually federates and allows me to talk with the wider Fediverse network. It's been something I wanted to do since at least 2018, but only now really took the steps to properly attempt it.

I'd love to hear any suggestions or potential bugs people can find (contributions are also welcome ^^)!

Cheers :)

Admin team of LGBTQIA.Social Mastodon instance received abuse email from Russian censorship agency, where they demanded to remove an account. The account in question represented a small group that ran a collaborative blog for LGBTQIA youth and adults in Russia.

Shortly after refusal to comply with agency's demands, the instance was blocked and is now unreachable from Russia.

All previous blocks of Fediverse instaces in Russia were related to hosting CSAM.

Especially nice in combination with Akkoma instances as it supports:

  • Markdown / MFM
  • Emoji Reacts
  • Quote Posts
  • Bubble Timeline

I went to login to my mbin (previously kbin) account today for the first time in a few weeks, and I was greeted with an image that indicates the assets of teacup.social had been seized. http://teacup.social

Doesn't make any sense to me, teacup.social had all the normal stuff blocked, like lemmynsfw.com.

Is this legitimate or did someone else steal the server and this is their version of a joke?

This is a sort of a cross post but I was thinking maybe to get some visibility on the issue of UK public agencies requiring the use of private social networks to engage with them - Maybe a petition? Im surprised that someone hasnt started one already..

We sat down and interviewed Manton Reece, the creator of Micro.Blog. Micro.Blog is an IndieWeb platform with microblogging capabilities that marries a social experience with a more traditional personal website / blogging concept. It federates via ActivityPub, and has been a part of the Fediverse since 2018.

Plugins for fediverse platforms.

Where is this up to? Is anyone thinking along these lines?

I've seen @db0 espouse such (eg https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/8581651) (sorry for the tag if annoying).

I've certainly thought of it myself ... because it's a pretty obvious idea for an ecosystem aiming for richness and sustainability.

Seems a perfect fit for reusable moderation tooling too, rather than each new platforms having that trouble.

This is essentially #bluesky 's idea it seems.

In response to Joe Biden and the White House enabling ActivityPub federation via Threads, a number of people asked: "Why didn't the White House just self-host their own Mastodon server?"

Here's some very basic musings on what it would take for that to happen. and what some of the hurdles are. Don't consider it a definitive answer, but a jumping-off point.

Both President Biden and the White House have enabled the Fediverse integration on Threads.

Mobilizon gets new ownership. One of the primary suppliers of shared deny lists in the fediverse is spinning down, in favour of IFTAS' new upcoming FediCheck shared deny list project. Updates on the amount of Threads accounts that connect to the fediverse.

Shipping soon (tm) but we heard that before. Still looking forward to it and they explicitly mention Lemmy compatibility.

However for the app API they probably should have just made it compatible with Lemmy apps 🤷‍♂️

Server indexes of places for newcomers to join can be instrumental for Fediverse adoption. However, sudden rule changes can leave some admins feeling pressure to change policies in order to remain listed.

Threads.net should be treated the same as any other bad actor in the Fediverse and defederated from all major mastodon servers such as mastodon.social due to housing hate speech.

We can't allow double standards because "they're so big." This is exactly why an instance of this size is dangerous in the Fediverse because admins will create double standards due to threads' sheer size and userbase.

If they allow hate speech and can't keep their userbase moderated then they need to be blocked. Full stop.

Today, I’m talking to Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky Social, which is a decentralized competitor to Twitter, er, X. Bluesky actually started inside of what was then known as Twitter — it was a project from then-CEO Jack Dorsey, who spent his days wandering the earth and saying things like Twitter should be a protocol and not a company. Bluesky was supposed to be that protocol, but Jack spun it out of Twitter in 2021, just before Elon Musk bought the company and renamed it X.
