Anybody who is allowed out of NK will basically have their family held hostage. If you defect, your family goes to the gulag for three generations. These guys will probably rather die than risk that.

They could just pretend to be KIA and walk away right? It's not like the NK government would have the resources to figure out if they defected or simply died and got a field burial.

That would require a pretty massive change of the standard procedures in such cases. But I agree it would probably be for the better in this case.

Probably their easiest way out of NK fairly cleanly if any of them have been thinking about it.

I think SK intelligence already reported that NK is rounding up families of deployed soldiers. They said it was to keep potential losses from spreading, but it might as well be a security against deflection.

North Korea already has a high defection rate. This ... this is going to do the exact opposite of slowing that down.
