I've got Against the Storm and I played it a bit, then my son said something like "isn't this just a worse version of dwarf fortress" and I've not really recovered from that yet

I mean, there's inspiration and elements from Dwarf Fortress, but it's absolutely its own gem of a game. It sounds like your son needs to sit down to play and then wonder where the last 12 hours went himself!
